Keto Recipe: Bacon Jam

We saw bacon jam on a food show featuring amazing and unique burgers. We knew we had to ketofy bacon jam for our next burger night. If you've never had bacon jam, it has flavors similar to bacon BBQ sauce but it's on a whole other level. Use it to top off your burgers, omelettes or scoop it up with keto crackers. You can add different spices to change the flavor profile too, scroll down for some ideas.

Keto Bacon Jam

  • 16oz bacon, nitrate-free, chopped

  • 3 medium onions, chopped

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/4c water

  • 1/4c brown sugar substitute (we use Swerve)

  • 2T cooking Sherry (or apple cider vinegar)

  • 1 tsp dried Thyme

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • 1/16 tsp cayenne or chili powder (check out these cute mini measuring spoons)

1. In a large skillet, cook chopped bacon until crisp. Remove from pan and set aside.

2. Drain all but 2-3 tablespoons of the bacon grease. Return pan to medium-low heat and add chopped onions. Season with salt and cook until translucent (about 15 minutes).

3. Add bacon, water, sherry, brown sugar and thyme. Simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutes, or until syrupy.

4. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 10-15 minutes. Onions should be very soft and the mixture will be thick and shiny. Remove from heat and serve. Store leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate.


Optional Add-ins

If you like a little more spice try jalapeño bacon jam, mince 1 jalapeño and add in with the onions. Want it a little sweeter, add an extra tablespoon of brown sugar substitute and omit the chili powder. Make maple bacon jam by swapping the brown sugar substitute and water for 1/2c sugar free maple syrup (we use ChocZero). Kick it up a notch by adding 1-2T bourbon after removing from the heat for bourbon bacon jam.
