Keto Recipe: Grits, Sweet or Savory

Updated: Dec 6, 2019

Pre-Keto, grits were a staple in our house. Mostly, eaten for breakfast, prepared like any other hot cereal. But with grits you can make them sweet or savory. And the same applies to this keto-approved replacement - almond flour. Coarse ground is best but we usually only have fine ground, because that's what we bake with. Give it a try and tell us what you think.

Cheesy Grits with Bacon

  • 1T butter

  • 1T bacon bits

  • 1/2c heavy whipping cream or half and half*

  • 1/2c coarse almond flour

  • 1/4-1/2c shredded cheese (we like sharp cheddar/parmesan)

  • s&p to taste

Melt butter in saucepan on medium heat. Add bacon bits and fry for 2-3 minutes, this will give your grits a nice smokey flavor. Add heavy whipping cream, bring to a boil while whisking. Then, add almond flour and cheese. Whisk until cheese has melted and it has thickened, about 2-3 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste and serve. Enjoy!

Nut and Berry Grits

  • 1T butter

  • 1T brown sugar sub (we use Swerve)

  • 1/2c almond milk or coconut milk*

  • 1/2c coarse almond flour

  • 1T chopped nuts (pecan, almond or walnuts are our favs)

  • 1T dried fruit (cranberry, blueberry, strawberry)

  • dash of cinnamon, nutmeg and/or clove (whatever spice combo you like)

Melt butter and brown sugar sub in saucepan on medium heat. Add milk, bring to a boil while whisking. Then, add almond flour and spices. Whisk until it has thickened, about 2-3 minutes. Stir in the fruit and nuts just before serving. Enjoy!

*Note: We usually use almond or coconut milk and cook it for a few extra minutes to get the right texture. For a quicker and thicker consistency use heavy cream or half and half.

TIP: If you have One on One Flavors or Sweet Life Flavor Company concentrates, add "corn tortilla" flavor to savory grits or "cornbread" to sweet grits for a more authentic corn flavor.
